It was a cool and cloudy morning as I headed out with David Lord for a private fishing charter on the waters of Lake Erie and the Niagara River near North Tonawanda, NY. April is a fantastic time for targeting Smallmouth Bass in these parts, as the fish become more active with the warming waters. Despite the overcast skies, the conditions were shaping up to be quite favorable for an exciting day on the water. We launched the boat and started drifting, working various sections of the lake and river using a combination of live bait and artificial lures. It didn't take long before David's rod bent over, and he set the hook into a feisty Smallmouth Bass. The fish put up a spirited fight, stripping line and making powerful runs, but David kept his cool and carefully worked it to the net. After a quick photo, we released the bass back to the water unharmed. This pattern continued throughout the morning, with David hooking into several more Smallmouths, as well as a few Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout mixed in. The action was steady, and we had a great time working the lake and river for these hard-fighting gamefish.
